Kirk Makin is the Justice Reporter for The Globe and Mail newspaper. He has been covering that beat since 1986. Prior to that, he spent four years at the newspaper's court bureau. Kirk has been immersed in legal journalism since the enactment of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Over the years, Mr. Makin has covered numerous high-profile trials including Henry Morgentaler, Ernst Zundel, Paul Bernardo, and Guy Paul Morin. He also covered the Kaufman Commission and the Goudge Commission. He has written approximately 5,500 stories about the judiciary, the legal profession and, in particular, the Supreme Court of Canada and its judgments.

Alongside his busy responsibilities as Canada's foremost justice reporter, Mr. Makin currently teaches a course in journalism at Ryerson University.

In 1992, Mr. Makin wrote the best-selling book, Redrum the Innocent: The murder of Christine Jessop and the trials of Guy Paul Morin. He has written extensively for magazines and legal publications; appeared regularly as a justice commentator on TV and radio; and hosted a History Television series about famous legal cases, History's Courtroom, in 2003 and 2004.
